    Spirit House

Change and transformation are the common thread in Monali Meher's work. Where you come from, where you are going, are questions that concern her. Her work is in motion, as time passes, as people grow and move. Whether it is a performance, an installation, whether she draws or films; Meher prefers to explore areas in between. What is on the way, not what is already certain. She explores the world between private and public, navigates between recognition and alienation.
She wraps everyday objects from her personal life with red thread. All red and woolly, they become common, almost anonymous. At the same time, they remain recognizable from Monali Meher. The work takes her back to India, where red is a sacred color and colored thread is used in rituals. Packing is a meditative activity, she takes her time. And before unpacking. Making and image thus coincide.
Come see this world where everything is unexpectedly soft. Where things haunt like little red-haired ghosts, ghosts of everyday life. Think of Ariadne's thread, who tried to slow down time, turn it back. Or perhaps you see the common thread in everything?
Monali Meher studied in Mumbai and at the Rijksacademie Amsterdam. Her performances and other work have been shown from Tate Modern to Rijksmuseum Twenthe, from China to Italy. She has lived and worked in Amsterdam since 2000. World citizen, now in Beugen.
