    Mirror images, viewing boxes

    An installation by Ri-Jeanne Cuppens

Since the small silo was peeled off and the prickly branch crust is missing, the windows of MvAT have been sticking out without a care in the world. Ri-Jeanne Cuppens sees it as dioramas, and her installation exploits that. She lets you focus on what's going on inside. Where you really only see a small building, an expanding world appears to be unfolding. Ingeniously arranged mirrors break the familiar order of top, bottom, left, right. With her interventions, Cuppens makes the lines dance to her tune. What is physically present and what is just reflection, what is actually built and what turns out to be purely fictional architecture - you don't know. Your gaze finds no support, you tumble through infinity.

With Ri-Jeanne Cuppens, Ans Verdijk has a colleague in every respect; just like her, she is an artist, teacher at the Maastricht Academy and initiator. Cuppens started “De Houtkust” in Houthem St. Gerlach this summer; a new cultural meeting place. The first project was a combination of her own reflections, a concert by the recorder ensemble Lunet and 14 short films by artists, including herself and Verdijk. They are now working together again in Beugen.

    From August 20 to October 26, 2019.
